Diamond Dove (aka Moonlight Downs) is Adrian Hyland’s debut novel. The action, set in the Australia outback, is narrated by Emily Tempest. When the book opens she has just return Moonlight Downs, the Aboriginal camp of her childhood:

“I parked my little ute on the outskirts of the cap and sat there, looking at the scatter of corrugated iron hovels.

There’s enough people here, I thought. Boys brawling over a flaccid football, girls bouncing a basketball in a cloud of dust, young men working on a car, pensioners chewing on the cud. A bare-arsed tacker raced past pushing a pram wheel with a length of wire.

Fifty, maybe sixty people all up. The Moonlights Downs community.”

She’s been away for twelve years now:

“Adelaide, Melbourne, boarding school, university. I’d started three degrees and finished none of them, had a dozen different jobs, most of them in grungy pubs and bars. Done a lot of travel. Somehow it seemed always gravitating towards the drier parts of the world.”

And later on:

“I headed off overseas. Deckhanded on a yacht across North Africa. Ran a bar in Turkey. Travelled through Rajasthan – on a bloody camel, half the time. Spent six months wandering along the silk Road itself. I was running so hard it never occurred to me that I was lost”.

Emily grew up on Moonlight Downs. Her mother, Alice Limmen, was a Wantiya woman. Of her she remembers almost nothing except a thin sweet face, a Wantiya lullaby and the enveloping breasts upon which she used to muzzle herself to sleep. Her father, Jack Tempets, was a wandering whitefeller who courted, married and buried her in the space of five years.

Within hours of her arrival the tribe's elder, and Alice’s friend and mentor, is brutally murdered and mutilated. Blakie Japanangka, a man of incredible strength and very little grip on sanity, is the only suspect..until Emily starts asking questions.

I hope you'll excuse my insolence for copying and paste here what Rob Kitchin wrote about this “wonderful novel. Engagingly written, with good prose, a well crafted, multi-textured plot, and perfectly paced, Hyland transports the reader into the natural and social environment of the Australian outback, the worlds of aborigines and white settlers, and their interface. …………. The characterization is excellent, with Emily Tempest particularly well drawn, with just the right amount of back story that the reader understands the context but is always kept in the present. ….….…. Diamond Dove cleverly explores race relations and social and political tensions in contemporary Australia ….”. I’m no able to put it better.

Diamond Dove (también conocida como Moonlight Downs) es la primera novela de Adrian Hyland. La acción, ambientada en el interior de Australia, está narrada por Emily Tempest. El libro comienza cuando Emily acaba de regresar a Moonlight Downs, el campamento aborigen de su infancia.

Emily ha estado fuera doce años:

"Adelaida, Melbourne, el colegio, la universidad. Empecé tres carreras y no terminé ninguna, tuve una docena de trabajos diferentes, la mayoría de ellos en pubs y bares conchambrosos. Hice un montón de viajes. De alguna manera parecía gravitar siempre hacia las partes más secas del mundo. "

Emily se crió en Moonlight Down. Su madre, Alicia Limmen, era una mujer Wantiya. Espero que disculpen mi atrevimiento por copiar y pegar aquí lo que Rob Kitchin ha escrito sobre esta maravillosa novela. “Atractivamente escrita, con una buena prosa, una trama bien construida con varias texturas y con un ritmo perfecto, Hyland nos transporta al entorno natural y social del interior de Australia, a los mundos de los aborígenes y de los colonos blancos, y a su interrelación. ... ... ... .... La caracterización es excelente, con una Emily Tempest particularmente bien dibujada, con la cantidad justa de trasfondo histórico para que el lector entienda el contexto, pero siempre manteniéndose en el presente. .... .... .... Diamond Dove explora con habilidad las relaciones raciales y las tensiones sociales y políticas en la Australia de hoy .....". Yo no soy capaz de decirlo mejor.

Lamentablemente no está traducida al castellano hasta este momento.

My “Q” is for Quartey. Dr. Kwei Quartey was born in Ghana and raised by an African American mother and a Ghanaian father, both of whom were university lecturers. Even though his professional writing career began after he became a physician, his desire to be a writer started at a very early age. Kwei Quartey now lives in Pasadena, California. He writes early in the morning before setting out to work at HealthCare Partners, where he runs a wound care clinic and is the lead physician at an urgent care centre. As a writer, he is the author of Inspector Darko Dawson mystery series:

Synopsis from the publisher: In a shady grove outside the small town of Ketanu, a young woman—a promising med student—has been found dead under suspicious circumstances. Eager to close the case, the local police have arrested a poor, enamoured teenage boy and charged him with murder. Needless to say, they are less than thrilled when an outside force arrives from the big city to lead an inquiry into the baffling case.
Detective Inspector Darko Dawson, fluent in Ketanu’s indigenous language, is the right man for the job, but he hates the idea of leaving his loving wife and young son, a plucky kid with a defective heart. Contrariamente a mi costumbre de leer sólo un libro a la vez, elegí de mi estantería Hasta nunca, mi amor, un libro relativamente corto, sólo 172 páginas en mi edición. El tamaño era el adecuado para llevarlo conmigo. Y en pocas horas lo había devorado en lugar de leerlo.

En la contraportada se dice: Massimo Carlotto nos sumerge en la mente de alguien que está dispuesto a todo para medrar en la sociedad y redimir su pasado político. Un retrato insólito y sorprendente de la Italia contemporánea. Negro, duro y violento.

La historia está contada en primera persona por Giorgio Pellegrini, un italiano que lucha en América Central junto con un grupo guerrillero. Ha recibido la orden de matar a un compatriota que huyó con él. Ambos estaban condenados a cadena perpetua en rebeldía. En los años 70 y como militantes de un grupo de izquierda colocaron una bomba en la sede de la Asociación de Industriales matando a un vigilante nocturno. Pellegrini ejecuta la orden, mata a su compañero y decide volver a Italia. Quiere redimirse por su pasado político y convertirse en un hombre respetable. Nadie ni nada lo detendrá.

El libro gira en torno a un personaje frío y calculador, amoral y despiadado, brutal y ambicioso, egoísta e inteligente, totalmente incapaz de tener ningún sentimiento o sentir remordimiento alguno. Desde el principio sabemos que es un asesino, no podemos sentir simpatía alguna por él. El libro no es apto para todas las sensibilidades, sin embargo me pareció interesante, su ritmo es rápido y me resultó entretenido. Puede que no sea una gran novela, pero es una lectura digna en mi opinión.

The Goodbye Kiss by Massimo Carlotto

Contrary to my habit of reading one book at a time, I chose from my bookshelf The Goodbye Kiss, a relatively short book, only 172 pages in my edition. The size was just right to take it with me. And in a few hours I had devoured it rather than read it.

The back cover states: Massimo Carlotto plunges us into the mind of someone who is willing to do anything to climb in society and to redeem his political past. An unusual and striking portrait of a contemporary Italy. Noir, hard and violent

The story is told in first person by Giorgio Pellegrini, an Italian fighting in Central America with a guerrilla group. He has been ordered to kill a fellow countryman who fled with him. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia. In the 70's as militants of a leftist group, they placed a bomb at the Industrial Association headquarter killing a night watchman. Pellegrini carries out the order to kill his comrade and decides to return back to Italy. He wants to redeem himself from his political past and become a respectable man. Nobody and nothing will stop him.

The book revolves around a cold and calculating character; amoral and ruthless; brutal and ambitious; selfish and intelligent; completely unable to have any sentiment or feel remorse. From the very beginning we know he is a murderer, we cannot have any sympathy for him. The book is not for all sensibilities, however I found it interesting, fast-paced and very entertaining. It might not be a great novel, but it’s a worthy read in my opinion.

Today is a bank holiday in the Community of Madrid. We celebrate Community's Day on May 2nd.

This date was chosen to commemorate that “on the morning of May 2 (1808), a raging group of civilians revolted in front of the Palacio Real, fearing the French troops intended to send Francisco de Paula, King Carlos IV's youngest son, to Bayona with his brother and father. Gunfire ensued, and word of the events spread all over the city. People rose up, fighting the mightier French troops with whatever they could use as weapons. Two captains, Daoiz and Velarde, and a lieutenant, Ruiz, disobeyed Madrid's Captain General Francisco Javier Negrete orders and quartered at the Monteleón Artillery barracks, which stretched from what is now Plaza de 2 de mayo to Calle Carranza. Helped by a small group of soldiers and some brave citizens who had marched to the barracks from the Royal Palace, the group resisted the French for three hours, doing so with very little ammunition, since they couldn't access the armoury.

Daoiz and Velarde died in the bloody fight. Ruiz managed to escape, only to die from his wounds later. Murat's forces executed soldiers and civilians throughout the city, including in the Casa de Campo and what's now the Parque del Oeste, captured by Goya in one of his two famous paintings of the executions—both restored in 2008 to celebrate the bicentennial of the events. The events marked the beginning of the five-year War of Independence (Peninsula War in the UK) against the French. The remains of the three military heroes, together with those who were executed at Paseo del Prado, are now held in an obelisk-mausoleum at Plaza de la Lealtad.” (taken from Fodor’s, the parenthesis are mine).

And my “P” is for Padura. Leonardo Padura was born in 1955 in Havana and lives in Cuba. He has published a number of short-story collections and literary essays but international fame came with the Havana Quartet, all featuring Inspector Mario Conde. Like many others of his generation, Padura had faced the question of leaving Cuba, particularly in the late 80s and early 90s, when living conditions deteriorated sharply as Russian aid evaporated. He chose to stay. And to write beautiful ironic novels in which Soviet-style socialism is condemned by implication through scenes of Havana life where even the police are savagely policed. The crime novels feed on the noises and smells of Havana, on the ability of its inhabitants to keep joking, to make love and music, to drink rum, and to survive through petty crime such as running clandestine bars and restaurants.

The Inspector Mario Conde Series:

Havana Blue. Bitter Lemon Press, 2007. (Original title, Pasado perfecto (Tusquets 2009), 1991). The publisher’s blurb reads: “Lieutenant Mario Conde is suffering from a terrible New Year’s Eve hangover. (Original title, Vientos de cuaresma (Tusquets, 2009), 1994 .The publisher’s blurb reads: “Twenty-four year old Lissette Delgado was beaten, raped, and then strangled with a towel. Marijuana is found in her apartment and her wardrobe is suspiciously beyond the means of a high school teacher. Lieutenant Conde is pressured by “the highest authority” to conclude this investigation quickly when chance leads him into the arms of a beautiful redhead, a saxophone player who shares his love for jazz and Japanese fighting fish. Havana Red. Bitter Lemon Press, 2005. (Original title, Mascaras (Tusquets, 2009), 1997. The publisher’s blurb reads: “A body is found in a Havana park. A young transvestite dressed in a beautiful red evening dress, strangled. The victim had fled his family, finding refuge with Marqués, a forgotten man in his own country, an author and theatre director once condemned by his government for being a “heretical homosexual”, living alone surrounded only by books, his house in ruins. In the baking heat of the Havana summer Conde moves through a Cuban reality where nothing is what it seems, a dark, fascinating world of men and women born in the Revolution who live without dreaming of exile and seek their identity in the midst of disaster.”

Havana Black. Bitter Lemon Press, 2006. (Original title, Paisaje de otoño (Tusquets, 2009), 1998. The publisher’s blurb reads: “The brutally mutilated body of Miguel Forcade is discovered washed up on a Havana beach. Head smashed in by a baseball bat, genitals cut off by a blunt knife. Forcade was once responsible for confiscating art works from the bourgeoisie fleeing the revolution. Had he really returned from exile just to visit his ailing father? Lieutenant Mario Conde immerses himself in Cuba's dark history, expropriations of priceless paintings now vanished without trace, corruption and old families who appear to have lost much, but not everything. Padura evokes the disillusionment of a generation who embraced the revolutionary cause and now struggles to survive in a decaying city threatened by hurricane Felix. Yet this novel is a eulogy to Cuba, to its music and sensuality, and to the great friendships of those who chose to stay and fight for survival.”

Adiós Hemingway. Canongate Press, 2006 (novella). (Original title: Adiós Hemingway (Tusquets, 2006), 2001. The publisher’s blurb reads: “When the skeletal remains of a man brought down by two buckshots forty years earlier surface on the Havana estate of Ernest Hemingway, ex-cop Mario Conte reluctantly accepts a reinstatement to investigate. Havana Fever. Bitter Lemon Press, 2009. (Original title: La neblina del ayer (Tusquets, 2009), 2003. The publisher’s blurb reads: “Havana, 2003, fourteen years since Mario Conde retired from the police force and much has changed in Cuba. He now makes a living trading in antique books bought from families selling off their libraries in order to survive. In the house of Alcides de Montes de Oca, a rich Cuban who fled after the fall of Batista, Conde discovers an extraordinary book collection and, buried therein, a newspaper article about Violeta del Rio, a beautiful bolero singer of the 1950’s, who disappeared mysteriously. Conde’s intuition sets him off on an investigation that leads him into a darker Cuba, now flooded with dollars, populated by pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers and other hunters of the night. But this novel also allows Padura to evoke the Havana of Batista, the city of a hundred night clubs where Marlon Brando and Josephine Baker listened to boleros, mambos and jazz.”

The Inspector Mario Conde books are translated from Spanish into English by Peter Bush, well known for his extensive work on Juan Goytisolo. He has also completed translations of Daniel Chavarria, Nuria Amat and Pedro de Alarcón.

In Memoriam Ernesto Sabato

Argentinian writer Ernesto Sabato died today age 99 at his home in the outskirts of Buenos Aires, where he was held for years due to health problems.

From The Independent yesterday: In the year of its author's 100th birthday, an Argentinian classic joins Penguin's modern hall of fame. Published in 1948, this brief, fierce breakthrough novel by a writer who trained as a physicist belongs among the existential landmarks of postwar fiction. The Tunnel, by Ernesto Sabato.

The Tunnel was one of the books that marked my generation. Sabato was awarded with the Cervantes Prize in 1984 and was a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature 2007.

Acabo de leer Nadie ama a un policía. Agradezco a Maxine en su blog Petrona este descubrimiento. En este libro Guillermo Orsi (Buenos Aires, 1946) utiliza magistralmente todos los elementos de la novela negra americana. Por eso me ha parecido interesante destacar este comentario aparecido en La Nación.com:

“Su pasión por el género se originó, curiosamente, en lo que él mismo considera una confusión. Al comienzo escribía novelas psicológicas, hasta que una de ellas, Sueños de perro, fue rotulada en España como policial, y en ese carácter ganó el Premio Umbriel destinado a obras del género, por lo que fue invitado a la tradicional Semana Negra de Gijón, que se celebra hace 23 años. "Intenté aclarar las cosas, pero fue inútil y terminé aceptando la caracterización. Al poco tiempo descubrí que era realmente lo que quería hacer. La novela policial permite reflejar las alternativas críticas de una sociedad y de la política de un país, e interpretarlas con otra mirada. Pero no me atrae la truculencia, común en autores de sociedades aún más violentas que la nuestra, por ejemplo, las de México o Colombia."

La historia se desarrolla en Argentina en diciembre de 2001. En el atardecer del día 21, Fernando de la Rúa redacta de puño y letra su renuncia a la presidencia de Argentina y abandona la casa en helicóptero. La novela está narrada en primera persona por el protagonista, Pablo Martelli alias Gotán (Tango al revés) un ex policía federal que se dedica desde hace veinte años a la venta de sanitarios. Fue expulsado de la federal y durante la novela conoceremos los motivos. Su gran amor le abandonó hace años, esta historia estará presente durante la novela.

La noche del 14 al 15 de diciembre Gotán rompe su norma de no atender el teléfono después de la medianoche. Al otro lado de la línea su amigo Edmundo Cárcamo quiere verle lo antes posible. Para ello tendrá que conducir durante más de seis horas hasta llegar a Mediomundo cerca de Bahía Blanca. Pero llega tarde, Edmundo ha sido asesinado a quemarropa y no hay rastro de una rubia, casi adolescente, de quien se había enamorado y con quien había planeado habitar en esa casa frente al mar. A partir de ese momento la acción se desarrolla entre Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires y algún extremo de la Patagonia. Gotán trata de averiguar el motivo de este asesinato. Durante su investigación se encontrará con una serie de personajes pintorescos. La trama le proporciona a Orsi la excusa perfecta para ofrecernos una visión de Argentina durante la crisis financiera, por desgracia, muy relevante también hoy no sólo en Argentina.

El libro me ha gustado mucho, está magníficamente escrito. Me ha resultado tremendamente entretenido y es muy sugerente. No creo que se le pueda pedir más. Espero leer pronto el último libro de Orsi, Ciudad Santa (Almuzara, 2009). Nadie ama a un policía fue galardonado con el II Premio Internacional de Novela Negra Ciudad de Carmona. Ciudad Santa obtuvo el año pasado el Premio Hammet de Novela Negra.

No-one Loves a Policeman by Guillermo Orsi

I’ve just read No-one Loves a Policeman. I have to thank Maxine and her blog Petrona for this discovery. In this book Guillermo Orsi (Buenos Aires, 1946) masterfully uses all the elements of North America crime ficition. Therefore I found interesting to highlight this comment taken from La Nación.com:

“His passion for the genre came, curiously, from what he considers a misunderstanding. At the beginning he wrote psychological novels, until one of them, Sueños de perro, was labelled in Spain detective fiction, and with that category won the Umbriel Price for the genre, and he was invited to the traditional Semana Negra de Gijón, which is being held for over 23 years. "I tried to clarify things, but without success and I ended up accepting the label. Soon I discovered that this was what I really wanted to do. Crime fiction allows reflecting the critical alternatives of a society and the politics of a country, and it also allows for an interpretation from a different perspective. But I am not attracted by gruesomeness, common in authors from societies which are even more violent than ours, for example, Mexico or Colombia.”

The story takes place in Argentina in December 2001. On the evening of December 21, Fernando de la Rua signs with his own handwriting his resignation as President of Argentina leaving the house by helicopter. The novel is narrated in the first person by the main character, Pablo Martelli alias Gotán (Tango backwards), a former federal police officer, who, for the last twenty years, is working as a salesman of bathroom fittings. He was expelled from the federal police and during the novel we will find out the reason. His great love left him years ago, this story will be a constant feature during the novel.

The night from the 14 to the 15 of December Gotán breaks his rule not to answer the phone after midnight. Across the line his friend Edmundo Cárcamo wants to see him as soon as possible. He will have to drive for more than six hours to Mediomundo near Bahia Blanca. But he arrives too late, Edmundo has been killed at point-blank range and there is no trace of a blonde, almost adolescent, he had fall in love with and escaped to live in that house by the sea. At this stage the action moves between Bahia Blanca, Buenos Aires and Patagonia. Gotán is trying to find out the reason for this murder. During his investigation he will find a series of colourful characters. The plot gives Orsi the perfect excuse to provide an outlook of Argentina during a financial crisis, unfortunately very relevant even today not only in Argentina.

The book is beautifully written and I’ve have enjoyed it very much. I found it extremely entertaining and very suggestive. I do not think one can ask for more. I hope to read soon Orsi's latest book, Ciuda Santa (Almuzara, 2009). No-one Loves a Policeman was awarded with the II International Prize for Crime Fiction Ciudad de Carmona. Ciudad Santa won last year the Spanish Hammett Award.

The Leopard (Harry Hole #8) begins shortly after the events described in The Snowman (Harry Hole #7). It’s important to read both books in this order to avoid spoilers and for a better understanding of some characters.

Deeply affected by the events narrated in The Snowman, Harry Hole has resigned from Oslo Crime Squad. He leaves Norway and doesn’t want to be found. Rakel and Oleg have abandoned him. His former boss, Gunnar Hagen, covers his absence as a leave until further notice but soon he will need him. The bodies of two women have been found in strange circumstances. Both deaths bear some similarities but no relationship can be found between the two cases. Hagen sends Kaja Solness to find Hole and she finds him in the squalor of Hong Kong's opium dens, deeply in debt and with no intention to return home. Finally Hole agrees to return after hearing his father is seriously ill.

Back in Oslo we find Hole in the middle of an old fight between two rival police departments, Oslo Crime Squad and Kripos. Simultaneously, a serial killer is on the loose and Hole’s father has a terminal illness. A third woman, an MP, is found dead hanging from the diving board of an empty swimming pool. And Hole makes a discovery. The three women had met one night in an isolated mountain hostel. Hole’s investigation will take him to places as far away as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These are some of the ingredients, the reader will find among the more than six hundred pages of this novel. I have to admit that I hesitated until the last moment on my rating. My admiration for Nebo's books is no secret. But finally I decided not to give him the highest mark for several reasons.

In a nutshell The Leopard is too long for my taste. At a certain point I was just willing to finalise its reading. This should not happen to me when I'm really enjoying a book. Some flaws in the plot have annoyed me. Some passages are not adequately explained or are hard to believe. There are also some unnecessary morbid descriptions with too many details. Finally I’m detecting a certain risk to fall into formulas that I hope Nesbo will avoid in future books.

But I would not like to be misinterpreted. The Leopard is an engaging story, wonderfully written. It has a gripping plot full of twists and turns, and it is worth reading it.

The Leopard (Harry Hole # 8) comienza poco después de los hechos descritos en The Snowman (Harry Hole # 7). Es importante leer los dos libros en este orden para evitar spoilers y para una mejor comprensión de algunos personajes.

Profundamente afectado por los acontecimientos narrados en The Snowman, Harry Hole ha dimitido de la Brigada Criminal de Oslo, abandona Noruega y no quiere que le encuentren. Rakel y Oleg le han abandonado. Su antiguo jefe, Gunnar Hagen, justifica su ausencia como una licencia hasta nuevo aviso, pero pronto le necesita. Se han encontrado los cuerpos de dos mujeres en circunstancias extrañas. Ambas muertes guardan cierta similitud, pero no se encuentra relación alguna entre ambos casos. Hagen envía a Kaja Solness para encontrar a Hole y le encuentra en la miseria de los fumaderos de opio de Hong Kong, muy endeudado y sin intención alguna de regresar a casa. Finalmente Hole accede a regresar al escuchar que su padre está gravemente enfermo.

De vuelta en Oslo nos encontramos a Hole en medio de una vieja pelea entre dos departamentos de policía rivales, la Brigada Criminal de Oslo y Kripos. Al mismo tiempo, un asesino en serie anda suelto y el padre de Hole tiene una enfermedad terminal. Una tercera mujer, miembro del parlamento, es encontrada muerta colgando del trampolín de una piscina vacía. Y Hole hace un descubrimiento. Las tres mujeres habían coincidido una noche en un aislado albergue de montaña. La investigación de Hole le llevará a lugares tan lejanos como la República Democrática del Congo.

Estos son algunos de los ingredientes que el lector encontrará entre las más de seiscientas páginas de esta novela. Tengo que admitir que dudé hasta el último momento sobre mi calificación. Mi admiración por los libros de Nebo no es ningún secreto. Pero finalmente he decidido no darle la nota más alta por varias razones.

En pocas palabras The Leopard es demasiado largo para mi gusto. En un determinado momento yo estaba deseando concluir su lectura. Esto no debería ocurrirme cuando estoy realmente disfrutando de un libro. Algunos fallos en la trama me han molestado. Algunos pasajes no están debidamente explicados o son difíciles de creer. También hay algunas descripciones morbosas innecesarias con demasiados detalles. Finalmente estoy detectando un cierto riesgo de caer en fórmulas que espero Nesbo evitará en sus próximos libros.

Pero yo no quisiera ser mal interpretado. The Leopard es una historia atractiva, maravillosamente escrita. Tiene una trama apasionante llena de giros y vueltas y vale la pena leerlo.

He encontrado este interesante desafío en Internet. Las reglas son simples, antes de comprar otro libro, haga una lista con seis de su estantería que tenga por leer y léalos. Una vez hecho esto puede continuar, comprar ese libro y, por supuesto, leerlo. Al mismo tiempo, haga otra lista con otros seis libros antes de comprar el siguiente, y así sucesivamente.

No tengo ni idea del origen de este desafío, pero me gustó. Agradecería cualquier información sobre dónde y cuándo surgió. El blog que aparece en la fotografía no parece estar en funcionamiento. Un secreto, ayer me compré tres libros por Internet. Tendré que hacer tres listas antes de comprarme otro. Mientras tanto, los primeros seis títulos en mi lista son:

2011 Challenge “Do not Accumulate, Read!!”

I have found this interesting challenge on the Internet. The rules are simple, before you buy another book, make a list of six from your TBR pile and read them. Once done you can go ahead, buy the book and, of course, read it. At the same time make another list of six books before buying the next one, and so on and so forth.

I have no idea of the origin of this challenge, but I liked it. I would appreciate any information on where and when was started. The blog that appears in the photograph does not seem to be operational. A secret; yesterday I bought three books on the Internet. I will have to make three lists before I can buy another one. Meanwhile, the first six titles in my list are:

World Book and Copyright Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 90 years ago.

World Book Day in the Community of Madrid is traditionally celebrated on the 23rd of April, but the 23rd falls on the same day as Holy Saturday this year. Thus, La Noche de los Libros (The Night of the Books) was moved to Wednesday 27 April 2011. Institutions, cultural centres, bookshops, libraries and cultural spaces in Madrid will open their doors to the public from 9.00 am until 1.00 am on the 28.

After all the Mediterranean cuisine is not at odds with crime fiction and the restaurant Ventorrillo Murciano, offers high quality rice from the Region of Murcia in Madrid. The rice with rabbit and snails and the rice with cod-fish and vegetables, among others, are highly recommended. The local in rustic style is nice but very small. The service is friendly but unprofessional. The wine list is very short, the wines are only from the region, Jumilla and Yecla, but try to taste something different though. For example Casa Ermita Crianza 2006 and enjoy yourself.

Begoña y yo fuimos ayer a ver a No mires atrás (La ragazza del lago, 2007), la ópera prima del director italiano Andrea Molaioli, escrita por Sandro Pertaglia y Andrea Molaioli y basada en la novela No mires atrás de Karin Fossum. La película fue premiada con 10 Donatellos, el equivalente a nuestros premios Goya. La localización en un pueblo del noreste italiano es todo un acierto. La interpretación de los actores es bastante adecuada. Tengo que admitir que me gustó la película, probablemente incluso más que la novela original, lo que suele ser bastante raro. Con todo es una película bastante decente, muy entretenida y adecuada para pasar un buen rato. Mi calificación 7 de 10 y muy recomendable.

Begoña and I went yesterday to see The Girl by the Lake (La ragazza del lago, 2007), the debut film of Italian director Andrea Molaioli, written by Sandro Pertaglia and Andrea Molaioli; and based on the novel Don’t Look Back by Karin Fossum. The film was awarded with 10 Donatellos, the equivalent of our Goya awards. The setting in a northeast Italian village is quite an achievement. The actors’ performance is pretty adequate. I have to admit I liked the film, probably even more than the original book, which is rather unusual. All in all a pretty decent movie, very entertaining and suitable for a good time. My rating 7 out of 10 and highly recommended.

Incendies (2010) es una película canadiense dirigida por Denis Villeneuve con guión de Denis Villeneuve adaptado de la obra teatral de Wajdi Mouawad, y protagonizada por Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette, Rémy Girard. Estuvo nominada al Oscar de este año como mejor película en habla no inglesa y, en mi opinión, es muy superior a la ganadora. Estrenada en España el viernes 11 de marzo de 2011.

Sinopsis: Cuando el notario Lebel (Rémy Girard) hace a los gemelos Jeanne y Simon Marwan (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin y Maxim Gaudette) la lectura del testamento de su madre Nawal (Lubna Azabal), se quedan atónitos al ver que les hace entrega de dos sobres, uno destinado a un padre que ellos creían muerto y el otro a un hermano cuya existencia ignoraban. Jeanne ve en este enigmático legado la clave del silencio de Nawal, encerrada en un mutismo inexplicable en las últimas semanas antes de su muerte y decide viajar de inmediato al Próximo Oriente para exhumar el pasado de una familia de la que no sabe prácticamente nada...
A Simon no le importan los caprichos póstumos de una madre que siempre se ha mostrado distante y poco afectuosa con ellos, pero el cariño que siente por su hermana lo impulsará a reunirse con Jeanne y recorrer con ella el país de sus antepasados siguiendo la pista de una Nawal muy lejana de la madre que han conocido.
Respaldados por el notario Lebel, los gemelos se remontarán al comienzo de la historia de la mujer que les dio la vida y descubren un destino trágico marcado a fuego por la guerra y el odio..., y el valor de una mujer muy especial.

Begoña y yo fuimos a ver esta película el pasado jueves 21 de abril. En pocas palabras es una película impresionante. La narración es muy cinematográfica, resulta difícil creer que se basa en una obra de teatro. La historia es desigual, con algunos altibajos que me impiden darle una calificación más alta. Resulta algo irregular en ocasiones. Pero la trama es muy intensa, aunque quizá no sea apta para algunos estómagos sensibles, porque puede resultar muy dura. En general es una película potente y emocionante que no nos puede dejar indiferentes a la tragedia. Mi calificación final es de 8 sobre 10.

Incendies (2010) film by Denis Villeneuve

Incendies (2010) is a Canadian film directed by Denis Villeneuve, written by Denis Villeneuve adapted from Wajdi Mouawad’s play, and starring Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Desormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette, Rémy Girard. It was nominated this year for Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film and, in my opinion, it is a far superior film than the final winner. It was released in Spain on Friday March 11.

Synosis: When notary Lebel (Remy Girard) sits down with Jeanne and Simon Marwan (Melissa Desormeaux Poulin, Maxim Gaudette) to read them their mother Nawal's will (Lubna Azabal), the twins are stunned to receive a pair of envelopes -- one for the father they thought was dead and another for a brother they didn't know existed. In this enigmatic inheritance, Jeanne sees the key to Nawal's retreat into unexplained silence during the final weeks of her life. She immediately decides to go to the Middle East to dig into a family history of which she knows next to nothing.
Simon is unmoved by their mother's posthumous mind games. However, the love he has for his sister is strong, and he soon joins her in combing their ancestral homeland in search of a Nawal who is very different from the mother they knew. With Lebel's help, the twins piece together the story of the woman who brought them into the world, discovering a tragic fate as well as the courage of an exceptional woman.

Begoña and I went to see this film last Thursday 21 April. In short it’s a stunning film. The narration is very cinematographic, and hard to believe it’s based on a play. The story is uneven with some ups and downs that prevents me to give it a higher score. It is somewhat irregular at times. But the plot is very intense, it might not be suitable for some sensitive stomachs, it is very tough. But overall is a very powerful and exciting film, and we cannot remain indifferent to the tragedy. My final rating is 8 out of 10.

En un mundo mejor (2010) cuyo título originál es Hævnen es una película danesa dirigida por Susanne Bier, con guión de Anders Thomas Jensen y Susanne Bier, y protagonizada por Mikael Persbrandt, Trine Dyrholm, Ulrich Thomsen, Markus Rygaard, William Johnk Nielsen. Fue la ganadora a la mejor película en lengua no inglesa de la pasada edición de los Oscar. Se estrenó en España el viernes 1 de abril. Begoña y yo fuimos a verla el pasado martes 19 de abril.

Sinopsis: Anton es médico y divide su tiempo entre una pequeña ciudad idílica en Dinamarca y su trabajo en un campo de refugiados en África. En estos dos mundos tan diferentes, él y su familia se enfrentan a conflictos que les empujan a escoger entre la venganza y el perdón. Anton y su esposa Marianne tienen dos hijos, están separados y consideran la posibilidad de divorciarse. El mayor de sus hijos, Elias, de diez años, sufre el constante acoso de unos compañeros hasta que otro chico le defiende, Christian, que acaba de trasladarse a Dinamarca desde Londres con su padre, Claus. La madre de Christian acaba de perder su batalla contra el cancer, y Christian está muy afectado por su muerte. Entre Elias y Christian se forma rápidamente una estrecha amistad, pero cuando Christian involucra a Elias en un acto peligroso de venganza con consecuencias potencialmente trágicas, su amistad se pone a prueba y sus vidas se ponen en peligro. Finalmenten, son sus padres los que tienen que ayudarles a aceptar la complejidad de las emociones humanas, el dolor y la empatía.

La película me resultó demasiado lenta y me terminé aburriendo. La historia me pareció demasiado predecible y no consiguió emocionarme. Bonitos paisajes y poco más. En conjunto me defraudó pues había leído muy buenas críticas y alguna de las películas anteriores de Susanne Bier me habían interesado. Con todo mi puntuación es de 5 sobre 10.

Their older, ten-year-old son Elias is being bullied at school, until he is defended by Christian, a new boy who has just moved from London with his father, Claus. Christian's mother recently lost her battle with cancer, and Christian is greatly troubled by her death. Elias and Christian quickly form a strong bond, but when Christian involves Elias in a dangerous act of revenge with potentially tragic consequences, their friendship is tested and lives are put in danger. Ultimately, it is their parents who are left to help them come to terms with the complexity of human emotions, pain and empathy.

I found it too slow and I got bored. The story seemed to me too predictable and it did not touch me. A beautiful scenery but nothing more. Overall I was disappointed since I had read some very good reviews and I did enjoyed some of Susanne Bier's previous films. Anyway I’ll give it a 5 out of 10.

I’m currently reading No-One Loves a Policeman, original title Nadie ama a un policía. Translated by Nick Caistor and published by MacLehose Press, first edition 29 April 2010. The publisher’s blurb reads:

My “N” is for Nesbø. I don’t think this will come up as a surprise to any sporadic or regular reader of this blog. Jo Nesbø is actually one of my favourite writers. Jo Nesbø was born in 1960 in Oslo, Norway. After graduating from the Norwegian School of Economics, he worked as a freelance journalist and as a stockbroker. His first crime novel featuring Harry Hole, Flaggermusmannen (The Bat Man), was published in Norway in 1997 and was an instant hit, winning the Glass Key Award for best Nordic crime novel (an accolade shared with Peter Høeg, Henning Mankell and Stieg Larsson). After the success of his first novel, Jo Nesbø devoted his time to writing and to his other passion: music. He is also the main vocalist and songwriter for the Norwegian rock band Di Derre. In 2007 Nesbø also released his first children's book, Doktor Proktors prompepulver. Check HERE for more information.

I’m currently reading The Leopard (Harry Hole #8, the sixth novel translated into English), I’m enjoying it very much. My review will be coming soon. In the meantime you can check my reviews of the previous books in the series: Petirrojo (The Redbreast) in Spanish, Nemesis, The Devil’s Star, The Redeemer, The Snowman.

The next novel (Harry Hole #9) will be published in Norway on 9 June 2011. The Norwegian title is Gjenferd. A tentative English title is Phantom. Nothing is known about the content of the book yet. According to the Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet, Jo Nesbø’s Gjenferd is already a bestseller in Norway due to heavy pre-ordering. Besides, The Snowman, the seventh book in the series (in the original, Norwegian publishing order), will be published in the US in May this year.

Mi "N" es por Nesbø. No creo que esto sea una sorpresa para cualquier lector esporádico o habitual de este blog. Jo Nesbø es en realidad uno de mis escritores preferidos. I must admit that for some strange reason I have not read Camilla Läckberg yet. Perhaps due to her success in Spain. She has always been on top of the bestseller lists these last years. But finally I decided to put my prevention aside, read her first book and judge for myself. Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, I thought that this note on her books, in the original Swedish, in Spanish and in English, could be of interest to some of the regular or occasional readers of this blog.

Debo admitir que por alguna extraña razón no he leído todavía a Camilla Läckberg. Tal vez debido a su éxito en España. Ella siempre ha estado en lo más alto de la listas de los libros más vendidos estos últimos años. Pero finalmente me decidí a abandonar mi prevención, leer su primer libro y juzgar por mí mismo. Un lugar incierto comienza con Adamsberg, junto con el comandante Danglard y el joven cabo Estelère, camino de Londres para asistir a una conferencia de tres días sobre la gestión de los flujos migratorios. Una noche, junto con su colega Radstock de New Scotland Yard, se encuentran con un aristócrata excéntrico y borracho, Lord Clyde-Fox, hablando de una gran cantidad de zapatos alineados en la acera, tratando de entrar en el antiguo cementerio de Highgate. Ella nos lleva a un torbellino de escenas e historias que parece totalmente inconexas pero que al final acaban teniendo sentido y, como piezas de un rompecabezas, encajan perfectamente. Una lectura exigente pero muy entretenida. Además Adamsberg es uno de los personajes más insólitos que podemos encontrar hoy en día en las novelas de crimen y misterio. Es intuitivo, carece de toda metodología de investigación, pero es capaz de sacar ventaja de todos los elementos que se encuentra en su vida cotidiana. Sin duda alguna una novela excelente. Soberbia.

An Uncertain Place opens with Adamsberg, together with commander Danglard and young caporal Estelère, on their way to London to attend a three-day conference on management of migration flows. One night, together with their colleague Radstock of New Scotland Yard, they meet an eccentric and drunk aristocrat, Lord Clyde-Fox, talking about a fair amount of shoes lined up on the sidewalk trying to enter the old cemetery at Highgate. They are not interested, except when they find out that the shoes have their feet inside, severed at the height of the knee.

Back in Paris the police finds an indescribable scene in a house in Garches. Pierre Vaudel, a seventy-eight years old journalist specialised on judicial cases, has been murdered. His body has been totally destroyed and his remains have been scattered everywhere. As the investigation progresses they hear of a similar case in Austria. And Adamsberg's intuition leads him to an uncertain place, a small town in Serbia following a trail of vampires.

Contrary to what it may seems at first glance we are not dealing with fantastic fiction, with vampires and other imaginary creatures. This is, without doubt, one of Vargas’ greatest achievements, the way she integrates a wide variety of extraordinary elements into a totally plausible argument, and what makes her an extremely innovative and original writer in my view. She takes us into a whirlwind of scenes and stories that seems totally disjointed but finally everything makes sense and, like pieces of a puzzle, fit perfectly well. A demanding read but very entertaining. In addition Adamsberg is one of the most unusual characters we can find today in crime fiction. He is intuitive, lacks all investigation methodology, but he is able to take advantage of all the elements found on his everyday life. Without doubt this is an excellent novel. Superb.

Adamsberg’s appearance is messy and his main difference with other police investigators is his lack of method. He is unable to analyse or to sustain a consistent argument during a long period of time. He is quite unpredictable but he achieves spectacular results thanks to his intuition and sensibility. He’s one of a kind.

El aspecto de Adamsberg es desordenado y su principal diferencia con otros investigadores de la policía es su falta de método. Es incapaz de analizar o de sostener un argumento consistente durante mucho tiempo. Bastante impredecible, logra resultados espectaculares gracias a su intuición y a su sensibilidad. Es único.

The publisher blurb reads: “Things are not going well for Inspector Salvo Montalbano. His long-distance relationship with Livia (better understood if you have read August Heat first) is on the rocks, he feels himself getting even older and he’s growing tired of the violence in his job.

Then the dead body of a young woman is found in an illegal dump, with half her face missing. Her identity at first unknown; a tattoo of a sphinx moth on her left shoulder links her with three other girls bearing the same mark, all recent Russian immigrants to Italy. Victims of an underworld sex trade, these girls have been rescued from the Mafia night-club circuit by a Catholic charity organization. The problem is, the other girls can’t help Montalbano with his enquiries. They are all missing.

Once again Camilleri presents a new instalment on his series featuring Inspector Montalbano. On top of that I’ve had the opportunity to read the excellent English translation by Stephen Sartarelli, another fascinating experience. Fortunately, although I have not read the entire series in order, I had read before August Heat, highly recommended for a better understanding of Salvo relationship with Livia. But what can I say about this book. Montalbano is my favourite crime fiction character today. A philosopher with an exquisite taste for fine food. And Camilleri’s novels are delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Highly recommended.

La propaganda editorial dice: "Las cosas no le van bien al Comisario Salvo Montalbano. Su relación a larga distancia con Livia (se entiende mejor si se ha leído antes Ardores de agosto) se encuentra encallada, él se siente que está más envejecido y se encuentra cansado de la violencia en su trabajo.

En esto el cadáver de una mujer joven aparece en un vertedero ilegal, le falta la mitad de su rostro. Su identidad, en un primer momento, desconocida. Una vez más Camilleri presenta una nueva entrega de su serie protagonizada por el Comisario Montalbano. Además he tenido la oportunidad de leer la excelente traducción inglesa de Stephen Sartarelli, otra experiencia fascinante. Afortunadamente, aunque no he leído toda la serie por orden, había leído antes Ardores de agosto, muy recomendable para una mejor comprensión de la relación de Salvo con Livia. Pero ¿qué puedo decir de este libro? Montalbano es mi personaje de ficción favorito hoy en día en las novelas de crimen y misterio. Un filósofo con un gusto exquisito por la buena comida. Y las novelas de Camilleri son una gozada. Disfruté mucho con este libro. Altamente recomendado.

OT - The City of Cordoba (Spain)

The city of Córdoba (Spain) is located south of Madrid. Connected by high speed train it takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes to arrive.

Córdoba was probably the largest city in the western world during the tenth and the eleventh centuries, at that time seat of the Umayyad Caliphate. Córdoba had over 500,000 inhabitants, some believe it was close to one million. And, most astonishing, the three religions, Muslims, Jews and Christians, were able to live in peace.

I spent last weekend there. The weather was great and I had the opportunity to revisit the Mosque, the Synagogue and the Gardens of the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos. I even had time to visit Medina Azahara. You can find my photos enclosed. Cordoba is a candidate for the 2016 European Capital of Culture.

B-Very Flat by Margot Kinberg

I have to admit I’m a regular reader of Margot Kinberg’s excellent blog: Confessions of a Mystery Novelist, I read it daily for over a year. Consequently I was very much interested to read her books. As far as I know, she has published two Publish or Perish and B-Very Flat.

B-Very Flat is almost a novella in length, just above 200 pages. It can be read in one sitting, thanks to the amount of dialogue that we find in it. It is very well built and the actions unfolds in two parts. The first half revolves around the different characters in the plot. This is probably one of Kinberg’s strengths, the portrait of characters. The second part focuses mainly on the investigation of the mystery in order to find the culprit in an Agatha Christie style with plenty of red herrings to keep the intrigue.

I really enjoyed reading B-Very Flat. Kinberg provides us with first hand information of a University campus in the States, an environment she is very familiar with given her background. This is also the second book in which Dr. Joel Williams, a former detective, of Tilton’s Department of Criminal Justices appears, but it can be read independently, in fact it is a standalone book. And although it is not necessary to read before Publish or Perish, I have the intention to do so in the near future. Stay tuned.

B-Very Flat de Margot Kinberg

Tengo que confesar que soy un lector habitual del excelente blog de Margot Kinberg, Confessions of a Mystery Novelist, lo leo todos los días desde hace más de un año. Por tanto estaba muy interesado en leer sus libros. Por lo que yo sé ha publicado dos Publish or Perish y B-Very Flat.

B-Very Flat tiene la extensión de un novela corta, apenas sobrepasa las 200 páginas. Se lee prácticamente de un tirón, gracias a la cantidad de diálogos que tiene. Está muy bien construida y la acción se desarrolla en dos partes. La primera mitad gira en torno a los diferentes personajes implicados en la trama. Este es probablemente uno de los puntos fuertes de Kinberg, el retrato de personajes. La segunda parte se centra principalmente en la investigación del misterio con el fin de encontrar al culpable al estilo de Agatha Christie, con un montón de pistas falsas que mantienen la intriga.

He disfrutado mucho leyendo B-Very Flat. Kinberg nos proporciona información de primera mano de un campus universitario en los Estados Unidos, un entorno que conoce muy bien dada su experiencia. Este es también el segundo libro en el que aparece el Dr. Joel Williams, un ex detective, del Departamento de Justicia Criminal de Tilton, pero se puede leer de forma independiente, de hecho es un libro independiente. Y aunque no es necesario leer antes Publish or Perish, tengo la intención de hacerlo en un futuro próximo. Permanezcan en sintonía.

I’ve been off blogging for a few days but I do want to meet my weekly appointment with The Crime Fiction Alphabet - a Community Meme hosted by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise. HERE you can visit the contributions of other fellow participants.

My lack of time and the fact that my readings in this, my favourite genre, are still scarce, force me to choose an author I have not read yet but in which I'm very much interested. Particularly after the excellent reviews he has received so far. Please forgive my boldness.

Therefore my “L” goes to Lelic. Simon Lelic has worked as a journalist and currently runs his own business. He was born in Brighton in 1976 and recently returned with his family to live there. His debut Rupture (2010), aka A Thousand Cuts in the US, was a huge critical success. The Facility, his second novel, has been published in January 2011. Rupture: “It's North London; in the depths of a sweltering summer, teacher Samuel Szajkowski walks into a school assembly and opens fire. Three pupils and a teacher are shot dead before Samuel turns the gun on himself. Por lo tanto mi "L" es por Lelic. Simon Lelic ha trabajado como periodista y actualmente dirige su propia empresa. Nació en Brighton en 1976 a dondes acaba de regresar a vivir con su familia. Begoña and I went to see yesterday night The Fighter, a 2010 drama directed by David O. Russell, the screenplay, based on a true story, written by Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo and Amy Adams. The film centres on the life of professional boxer "Irish" Micky Ward (Wahlberg) and his older half-brother Dicky Eklund (Bale). The film also stars Amy Adams as Micky's love interest, and Melissa Leo as Micky's and Dicky's mother. It was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, winning the awards for Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo).

I enjoyed this film although I have to admit that I like boxing (one of my shameful weaknesses) and sports in general. The story is human, the argument is realistic and it has some great characters. Besides Christian Bale’s performance is absolutely superb. Maybe not a great film, it may fall on too many commonplaces and nothing is new, but I liked it and and I had a great time. Which is not bad at all.

Begoña y yo fuimos a ver ayer por la noche The Fighter, un drama de 2010 dirigido por David O. Russell, está basado en una historia real escrita por Scott Silver Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy y Eric Johnson, y protagonizado por Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo y Amy Adams. La película narra la vida del boxeador profesional de origen irlandés Micky Ward (Wahlberg) y su hermano de madre Dicky Eklund (Bale). Está protagonizada también por Amy Adams en el papel de novia de Micky, y por Melissa Leo como la madre. Tuvo siete nominaciones a los premios Oscar de este año, incluyendo los de Mejor Película y Mejor Director, y consiguó los Oscar al mejor actor de reparto (Christian Bale) y a la mejor actriz de reparto (Melissa Leo).

Me gustó esta película, aunque tengo que admitir que me gusta el boxeo (una de mis debilidades vergonzosas) y los deportes en general. La historia es humana, el argumento es realista y tiene algunos personajes muy buenos. Además la interpretación de Christian Bale es extraordinaria. Tal vez no sea una gran película, puede que caiga en demasiados tópicos y no aporta nada nuevo, pero me gustó y me lo pasé muy bien. Lo que no está nada mal.

Mi calificación: 6/10

The Alphabet in Crime Fiction hosted by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise has arrived this week to letter K. Please visit her site HERE and read the contributions of other participants.

K is for Kinberg. Margot Kinberg was born and raised in Pennsylvania, where she graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and later received her Master’s degree from LaSalle University. After teaching at the University of Delaware for several years and earning her Ph.D. there, Kinberg moved west. She taught at Knox College in Galesburg, IL and is currently an associate professor at National University in Carlsbad, California. Kinberg currently resides in southern California with her husband, daughter and two dogs.

Her research interests are second language acquisition and foreign language pedagogy. She is particularly interested in foreign language immersion programs, and have done several studies of these programs. Some of the questions she researches are, "How proficient do children in immersion programs become?," " Are immersion programs appropriate for students with special needs?," " Does learning a second language affect one's first language?" . Margot Kinberg is also a writer of crime and mystery novels. Hickory Dickory Dock (aka Hickory Dickory Death) is a Hercule Poirot Mystery by Agatha Christie published in 1955. The title is taken, as are other of Christie’s titles, from a nursery rhyme: Hickory Dickory Dock. Nevertheless the only link to the original nursery rhyme is little more than the name of a road.

One day Miss Lemon, the perfect secretary, makes three mistakes while typing a simple letter. Poirot suspects that something is worrying her. Thus we learn that Miss Lemon has a sister, Mrs. Hubbard who runs a student hostel at 24-26 Hickory Road , where a series of petty thefts and other acts of vandalism had recently taken place. The list of stolen items include one evening shoe, a bracelet, a diamond ring, a powder compact, a lipstick, a stethoscope, ear-rings, a cigarette lighter, old flannels trousers, electric light bulbs, a box of chocolates, a silk scarf and a rucksack, both cut into pieces, boracid powder, bath salts, and a cookbook. Poirot, fascinated by this incomprehensible list, is ready to help Mrs. Hubbard when Celia Austin, a young resident, confesses that she has been behind most of these petty thefts. Her intention was to draw the attention of Colin McNabb, a psychology student she is in love with. Case closed. But the next day Celia is found dead in her room. Although it seems at first sight that she has committed suicide, soon it is confirmed that she has been murdered.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this wonderfully written book with Agatha Christie's usual trademark. Maybe there are some aspects that makes it a minor novel in her Poirot series but the characters are pretty well drawn, the relationship between the students at the hostel is nicely developed and the plot is quite ingenious. It is certainly a worthwhile reading.

Asesinato en la calle Hickory (Hickory Dickory Dock) es una novela de Agatha Christie protagonizada por Hércules Poirot y publicada en 1955. El título hace referencia a una canción infantil: Hickory Dickory Dock. Sin bien la única relación que tiene con esta canción es el nombre de una calle.

Un día Miss Lemon, la perfecta secretaria, comete tres errores al escribir una simple carta. Poirot sospecha que algo le preocupa. De esta manera conocemos que Miss Lemon tiene una hermana, la señora Hubbard que dirige un albergue de estudiantes en Hickory Road 24-26, en donde han tenido lugar recientemente una serie de hurtos insignificantes y algunos actos de vandalismo. La lista de artículos robados incluye un zapato de noche, una pulsera, un anillo de diamantes, una polvera, un lápiz de labios, un estetoscopio, pendientes, un encendedor, unos pantalones viejos de franela, bombillas, una caja de bombones, una bufanda de seda y una mochila, ambas hechas pedazos, ácido bórico en polvo, sales de baño, y un libro de cocina. Poirot, fascinado por lo incomprensible de esta lista, está dispuesto a ayudar a la Sra. Hubbard cuando Celia Austin, una joven residente, confiesa que ella ha sido la autora de la mayoría de estos pequeños hurtos. He disfrutado leyendo este libro maravillosamente escrito con la marca habitual de Agatha Christie. Tal vez tiene algunos aspectos que hacen que esté considerado una obra menor en la serie de Poirot, pero los personajes están muy bien dibujados, la relación entre los alumnos en el albergue está muy bien desarrollada y la trama es muy ingeniosa. Sin duda, es una lectura que merece la pena.

April is Aussie Authors Month

Thanks to Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise I find out that April is Aussie Authors Month. A nice opportunity to remind me that I’m well behind the 2011 Aussie Author Challenge. And I'm trying to remedy it by reading some of the books I've selected for this purpose, namely Diamond Dove by Adrian Hyland, The Broken Shore by Peter Temple and The Suspect by Michael Robotham.

Gracias a Kerrie en Mysteries in Paradise me entero de que abril es el mes de los autores australianos. Una buena oportunidad para recordarme que estoy muy retrasado en el 2011 Aussie Author Challenge. Y estoy tratando de ponerle remedio mediante la lectura de algunos de los libros que he seleccionado para este propósito, a saber, Diamond Dove de Adrian Hyland, The Broken Shore de Peter Temple y The Suspect de Michael Robotham.

I’m currently reading Hickory Dickory Dock by Agatha Christie and, searching the Internet, I’ve come across this blog post: Agatha Christie and Nursery Rhymes. I hope it will be of your interest .

Hickory Dickory Dock may not be considered one of her best books. Certainly you will not find it among Agatha Christie’s top ten but, like most of her books, it’s a worthwhile reading.

Actualmente estoy leyendo Hickory Dickory Dock (Asesinato en la calle Hickory) de Agatha Christie y, buscando en Internet, he encontrado esta entrada en inglés sobre Agatha Christie y los títulos de sus libros que hacen referencia a canciones infantiles. Espero que sea de su interés.

Hickory Dickory Dock puede que no esté considerado como uno de sus mejores libros. No lo encontrará seguramente entre los diez mejores de Agatha Christie pero, como la mayoría de sus libros, merece la pena su lectura.

Once again, I leave my self imposed break for a brief comment on a superb book.

The Snowman is the seventh instalment in Harry Hole’s series and the fifth book translated into English. The first two novels are not available in English yet. It opens one night, with the first snow fall. A young boy wakes to find his mother missing. Their house is empty but outside in the garden he sees his mother’s favourite scarf wrapped around the neck of a snowman. Inspector Harry Hole is convinced there is a link between the disappearance and a menacing letter he received a few months earlier. Searching unsolved case files he discovers that an alarming number of wives and mothers have gone missing over the years. When a second woman disappears his worst suspicions are confirmed. Hole is just a pawn in a deadly game. For the first time in his career Hole has to face a serial killer operating on his home turf. A killer who will drive him to the brink of insanity.

Most likely The Snowman is the best novel by Jo Nesbo I've read so far. I can only praise it and, possibly, I'll run out of adjectives. Therefore I will not even try. I just want to stress that it can be read as a standalone, it doesn’t matter if you have not read any of the previous books yet. If you begin with the best novel, you can always find the time to read the rest of the series later on and discover how Jo Nesbo has arrived here. I’m convinced that this will be a fascinating adventure. Pity I can no longer undertake it. Don’t miss it, go and get it. You won’t be able to put it down until the last page. Read it and judge by yourselves.

The Snowman was awarded The Norwegian Booksellers’ Prize 2007 for Best Novel of the Year and The Norwegian Book Club Prize (Den norske leserprisen) 2007 for Best Novel of the Year.

Una vez más, abandono mi auto impuesto descanso por un breve comentario sobre un libro extraordinario.

The Snowman (El muñeco de nieve) es la séptima entrega en la serie protagonizada por Harry Hole y el quinto libro traducido al inglés. Las dos primeras novelas no están disponibles todavía en inglés. Comienza una noche, con la primera nevada. Un niño se despierta y encuentra que su madre no está. Su casa está vacía, pero en el jardín ve la bufanda favorita de su madre alrededor del cuello de un muñeco de nieve. El inspector Harry Hole está convencido de que hay un vínculo entre la desaparición y una carta amenazadora que ha recibido pocos meses antes. Buscando en los archivos de casos sin resolver descubre que un alarmante número de esposas y madres han desaparecido en los últimos años. Y cuando una segunda mujer desaparece se confirman sus peores sospechas. Hole es sólo un peón en un juego mortal. Por primera vez en su carrera Hole se enfrenta a un asesino en serie que opera en su propio territorio. Un asesino que lo llevara al borde de la locura.

Lo más probable es que The Snowman sea la mejor novela de Jo Nesbo que he leído hasta ahora. Sólo puedo alabarla y, posiblemente, me quedaré sin adjetivos. Por tanto ni siquiera voy a intentarlo. Sólo quiero hacer hincapié en que se puede leer como un libro independiente, no importa si no han leído todavía ninguna de sus novelas anteriores. Si comienzan por la mejor, siempre podrán encontrar tiempo para leer el resto de la serie más adelante y descubrir cómo Jo Nesbo ha llegado hasta aquí. Estoy convencido de que esta será una aventura fascinante. Lástima que yo ya no puede llevarla a cabo. No se lo pierdan, vayan a buscarlo. No serán capaces de abandonarlo antes de la última página. Léanlo y juzguen por ustedes mismos.

Although this blog has taken a few days off I found interesting to highlight this film. Begoña and I went to see yesterday In the Electric Mist. It was released in Spain on 11 March 2011. While nothing extraordinary I really enjoyed it and I had a good time. I will certainly recommend it to all crime fiction readers and I’m looking forward to read the book by James Lee Burke on which it’s based. I particularly liked the actors’ performances, the pace of the film and a photography very appropriate with the story and its setting.

My Rating: 7 / 10.

En el Centro de la Tormenta (2009), película dirigida por Bernard Tavernier

Aunque este blog se ha tomado unos días de descanso me ha parecido interesante destacar esta película. Begoña y yo fuimos a ver ayer En el Centro de la Tormenta. Se estrenó en España el 11 de marzo de 2011. Aunque nada extraordinaria la he disfrutado mucho y pasé un buen rato. Yo sin duda la recomiendo a todos los lectores de novela negra y tengo muchas ganas de leer el libro de James Lee Burke en el que está basada. Me han gustado en particular las interpretaciones de los actores, el ritmo de la película y una fotografía muy apropiada con la narración y su entorno.

Mi calificación: 7/10.

Entanglement is set during the summer of 2005. A group of four people together with their therapist have retired to a former monastery in Warsaw for a week-end therapy session called Family Constellation. The morning after a tense session, one of the participants is found dead with a meat skewer stuck in one eye. Public Prosecutor Teodor Szacki is in charge of the investigation. The main suspects are the other participants and the psychotherapist who was leading the group. Most of the book follows Szacki during the investigation, at home with his family, and during a romantic encounter with a flirtatious young journalist. Occasionally other characters are closely following the course of the events making it clear that there is more at stake. The action develops very slowly until another murder is unearthed, a murder that took place twenty years earlier, before the fall of communism. But the events precipitate and the life of Szacki and his family will be in danger.

Entanglement is a superb police procedural nicely crafted. The argument is rather tangled, as the title suggests, and the pace is sometimes slow, but eventually all the pieces of this jigsaw puzzle fall into place, ….or maybe not. There is room for a sequel as suggested in the publisher’s biographical note. I found it a very entertaining read with well drawn characters. I could also constantly feel the presence of the city of Warsaw. The plot is intelligent and the solution is clever with an interesting twist at the end. Finally I felt that the translation is excellent.

Entanglement (Uwikłanie) is the third book by Zygmunt Miłoszewski, born in Warsaw in 1976, and his biggest success so far. Previously he had been a journalist and editor for the Polish edition of Newsweek. With this book he won the Wielki Kaliber Prize for the Best Polish Detective Novel of 2007. Entanglement, his first novel translated into English, was published in 2010 by Bitter Lemon Press. The author is writing a sequel also featuring Public Prosecutor Teodor Szacki.

La acción de Entanglement (Enredo o implicación - sentimental o criminal) se desarrolla durante el verano del 2005. Un grupo de cuatro personas, junto con su terapeuta, se han retirado a un antiguo monasterio en Varsovia para una sesión terapéutica de fin de semana llamada Constelaciones Familiares. La mañana siguiente a una tensa sesión, uno de los participantes aparece muerto con un pincho de carne clavado en un ojo. El fiscal Teodor Szacki se encarga de la investigación. Los principales sospechosos son los otros participantes y el psicoterapeuta que lideraba al grupo. La mayor parte del libro sigue a Szaski durante su investigación, en su casa con su familia, y durante un encuentro romántico con una joven y seductora periodista. Ocasionalmente otros personajes siguen de cerca el curso de los acontecimientos por lo que está claro que hay algo más en juego. La acción se desarrolla muy lentamente hasta que se descubre otro asesinato ocurrido veinte años atrás, antes de la caída del comunismo. Los acontecimientos se precipitan poniendo en peligro la vida de Szacki y de su familia.

Entanglement es un procedimiento policial soberbio, muy bien diseñado. El argumento es algo enredado, como sugiere el título, y el ritmo es a veces lento, pero, finalmente todas las piezas de este rompecabezas caen en su lugar .... o quizás no. Hay sitio para una continuación como se sugiere en la nota biográfica de la editorial. Me ha parecido una lectura muy entretenida con personajes bien dibujados. También he podido sentir continuamente la presencia de la ciudad de Varsovia. La trama es inteligente y la solución ingeniosa con un giro interesante al final. Para finalizar me ha parecido que la traducción es excelente.

Entanglement (Uwikłanie) es el tercer libro de Zygmunt Miłoszewski, nacido en Varsovia en 1976, y su mayor éxito hasta el momento. Anteriormente había trabajado como periodista y editor de la edición polaca de la revista Newsweek. Con este libro ganó el Premio Wielki Kaliber a la mejor novela negra polaca del 2007. Entanglement, su primera novela traducida al Inglés, ha sido publicada por Bitter Lemon Press en el 2010. El autor está escribiendo una continuación protagonizada también por el fiscal Teodor Szacki.

The Alphabet in Crime Fiction, a Community Meme hosted by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise has arrived this week to letter “i”. My “i” is for Indriðason, Arnaldur. Yes, I do know that in Iceland the last name is a patronymic or matronymic, not a family name; this person is properly referred to by the given name "Arnaldur" but, even if I’m using only family names, please allow me to bend my own rules.

Arnaldur Indriðason was born in Reykjavik on January 8 1961. He graduated with a B.A. degree in history from the University of Iceland in 1996. He was a journalist at Morgunbladid newspaper from 1981 – 1982 after which he became a freelance script writer. From 1986 – 2001 he worked as a film critic for Morgunbladid. In the year 2004 his books were seven of the ten most popular titles borrowed in Reykjavík City Library.

Arnaldur has published a number of thrillers, the first was Synir duftsins (Sons of Earth) in 1997 and many believe that that publication marked the start of a new wave of Icelandic crime fiction. Most of his novels involve the same team of detectives. Arnaldur is one of Iceland's leading crime story writers. He has received numerous awards for his books, among them the Glass Key Prize, an award given by Skandinaviska Kriminalselskapet (Crime Writers of Scandinavia) two years in a row, the first author to do so. In 2002 for his book Mýrin (Jar City) and in 2003 for Grafarþögn (Silence of the Grave). Silence of the Grave also received the CWA Gold Dagger Award in 2005. Arnaldur received The Drop of Blood, the Icelandic Crime Fiction Award, for Harðskafi (Hypothermia) and so was nominated for the Glass Key Prize a third time.

Arnaldur's books have been published in 26 countries and have been translated into German, Danish, English, Italian, Czech, Swedish, Norwegian, Dutch, Finnish, Spanish, Portuguese and French. Arnaldur Indriðason lives in Reykjavík with his wife and three children. He is the son of writer Indriði G. Þorsteinsson.

El Crime Fiction Alphabet, un Community Meme organizado por Kerrie en Mysteries in Paradise ha llegado esta semana a la letra "i". Mi "i" es por Indridason, Arnaldur. Sí, yo sé que en Islandia, el apellido es un patronímico, no es el nombre de la familia, esta persona está debidamente identificada por su nombre de pila "Arnaldur", pero, aunque sólo estoy utilizando los apellidos, permítanme, por favor, que me salte mis propias reglas.

Arnaldur Indridason nació en Reykjavik el 8 de enero de 1961. Se licenció en Historia por la Universidad de Islandia en 1996. Fue periodista en el periódico Morgunbladid entre 1981 - 1982 después se convirtió en un guionista “freelance”. De 1986 a 2001 trabajó como crítico de cine en Morgunbladid. En el año 2004 siete de sus libros estuvieron entre los diez títulos más prestados por la Biblioteca Municipal de Reykjavik.

Arnaldur ha publicado una serie de novelas de suspense, la primera Synir duftsins en 1997 y muchos consideran que su publicación marcó el inicio de una nueva etapa en la novela negra de Islandia. La mayoría de sus novelas están protagonizadas por el mismo equipo de detectives. Arnaldur es uno de los principales autores de novela negra en la historia de Islandia. Ha recibido numerosos premios por sus libros, entre ellos la Glass Key Prize, un galardón otorgado por Skandinaviska Kriminalselskapet (Asociación de Escritores de Novela Negra de Escandinavia), el primer autor que lo consigue en dos años consecutivos. En el año 2002 por su libro Myrin (Las marismas) y en 2003 para Grafarþögn (La mujer de verde). La mujer de verde también consiguió recibió el CWA Gold Dagger Award en el 2005. Arnaldur recibió La Gota de Sangre, el premio de Novela Negra es Islandia por Harðskafi (Hipotermia) y estuvo nominado por tercera vez para el premio Glass Key.

Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) sets out to track down her father, who put their house up for his bail bond and then disappeared. If she fails, Ree and her family will be turned out into the Ozark woods. Challenging her outlaw kin's code of silence and risking her life, Ree hacks through the lies, evasions and threats offered up by her relatives and begins to piece together the truth.

Begoña and I went yesterday to see Winter's Bone. An indie film that could have gone unnoticed, but fortunately received 4 Oscar nominations, despite its low budget. It is not an easy film to watch, but a hard drama that grabs you from the beginning to the end without giving you a break. It shakes you up to the limits of your comfort zone without concessions, but carefully avoids any unpleasant scene, or at least it does not delight in them. Nothing is gratuitous. It is beautifully narrated at a quiet but adequate pace, and it has an incredibly performance by mostly non-professional actors. The photography, the landscape and the music fit perfectly well into the narrative. A little gem and a great example of why I love so much going to the cinema.

Life in a Shatter Zone: Debra Granik's Film Winter's Bone (Spoiler alert: this review contains details of the plot).

Winter’s Bone es un drama naturalista en forma de thriller dirigido por Debra Granik. Está escrito por Debra Granik y Anne Rosellini, basado en la novela de Daniel Woodrell y protagonizado por Jennifer Lawrence, John Hawkes, Dale Dickey, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee, Tate Taylor. Fue la película ganadora del último Festival de Cine de Sundance, mejor película y mejor guión, y recibió 4 nominaciones a los Oscar en su 83ª edición, a la mejor película, mejor actriz, mejor actor de reparto y mejor guión adaptado.

Sinopsis: La adolescente de 17 años, Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence), se embarca en la búsqueda desesperada de su padre, que desapareció tras haber puesto el dinero de la casa familiar para pagar su fianza. Si no lo logra, perderán su casa y ella y su familia serán devueltos a los bosques Ozark. Desafiando el código de silencio y las amenazas y arriesgando su vida para salvar a los suyos, Ree Dolly descubrirá que entre lo que ve y lo que oye se esconde la verdad que no quieren que conozca.

Begoña y yo fuimos ayer a ver Winter's Bone. Una película independiente que podría haber pasado desapercibida, pero afortunadamente recibió 4 nominaciones a los Oscar, a pesar de su bajo presupuesto. No es una película fácil de ver, sino un drama duro que te atrapa desde el principio hasta el final sin darte un descanso. Te sacude hasta los límites de tu zona de confort sin concesiones, pero evita cuidadosamente cualquier escena desagradable, o al menos no se deleita en ellas. Nada es gratuito. Está magníficamente narrada a un ritmo tranquilo pero adecuado y con una interpretación increíble por parte de actores no profesionales en su mayoría. La fotografía, el paisaje y la música encajan perfectamente en la narración. Una pequeña joya y un gran ejemplo de por qué me gusta tanto ir al cine.

She lives with her obsessive mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) a former ballerina who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis), also impresses Leroy and becomes Nina’s competition. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan with her fiery personality. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

Begoña and I went to see Black Swan last Thursday. Nothing to write home about. I was left totally indifferent. I found the story empty. The recourse to a world of dreams is too easy, there is no need to explain a particular scene and, deliberately, the film keeps some ambiguity between reality and imagination, just for the sake of it. Only Natalie Portman’s interpretation can be saved from the mediocrity of the film.

Begoña y yo fuimos a ver Cisne Negro el pasado jueves. Nada del otro mundo. Me dejó totalmente indiferente. Me encontré con una historia vacía. El recurso a un mundo onírico es demasiado fácil, no hay necesidad de explicar ninguna escena en particular y deliberadamente mantiene cierta ambiguedad entre realidad e imaginación, sin más ni más. Sólo la interpretación de Natalie Portman se puede salvar de la mediocridad de la película.

Mi calificación: 4/10.

In my contribution to the 2011 Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge I arrive today at A Study in Scarlet. The relevance of this book lies in the fact that the universal character of Sherlock Holmes, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was first introduced to the public in this detective novel published in 1887. The first of the four novels and fifty-six short stories that make up what it is known today as the canon of Sherlock Holmes. Despite its later success and its universal recognition, neither this first book nor its main character attracted much public interest at that time.

The book is split in two halves. The first one is told in first person by Dr. Watson. He describes his first encounter with Sherlock Holmes through a mutual friend in 1881. Both agree to share rooms at 221B Baker Street. At this point the reader gets familiar with Holmes's eccentricities and with his uncanny ability to deduce information from his own observations. Watson is then given the opportunity to follow Holmes during the investigation of the Brixton mystery. The second part is narrated in third person and the story moves in a flashback to a Mormon community in the United States. In the last two chapters Watson takes back the accounts of the investigation to finish with Holmes’ own explanation.

The novel is relatively short, just 166 pages in my edition, and can easily be found on the Internet. An easy read as well and nicely told, except perhaps for the long flashback that can distract the reader's attention. But keep in mind that Conan Doyle did not use it again as a narrative tool. Anyway, it provides a contemporary account of (one of the ways) how the West of the United States was won, which was probably as exciting at that time and it is today. A nice mix of detective fiction and adventures. A must read for any genre aficionado.

En mi contribución al 2011 Vintage Mystery Reading Challenge llego hoy a Estudio en escarlata. La relevancia de este libro reside en el hecho de que el personaje universal de Sherlock Holmes, creado por Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, se da a conocer por primera vez al público en esta novela policíaca publicada en 1887. La primera de las cuatro novelas y cincuenta y seis cuentos que componen lo que hoy se conoce como el Canon holmesiano. A pesar de su éxito posterior y de su reconocimiento universal, ni este primer libro, ni su protagonista suscitaron mucho interés por parte del público en ese momento.

El libro se divide en dos partes. La primera está contada en primera persona por el Dr. Watson. Nos describe su primer encuentro con Sherlock Holmes a través de un amigo común en 1881. Ambos acuerdan compartir habitaciónes en el 221B de Baker Street. En este punto el lector empieza a conocer las excentricidades de Holmes y su asombrosa habilidad para sacar deducciones a partir de sus propias observaciones. Watson tiene entonces la oportunidad de seguir a Holmes durante la investigación del misterio de Brixton. La segunda parte está narrada en tercera persona. En un flashback la historia se traslada a una comunidad mormona en los Estados Unidos. En los dos últimos capítulos Watson retoma la narración de la investigación para terminar con la explicación de Holmes.

La novela es relativamente corta, apenas 166 páginas en mi edición, y se pueden encontrar fácilmente en Internet. De fácil lectura y muy bien contada, a excepción quizás del largo flashback que pueden distraer la atención del lector. Pero tengan en cuenta que Conan Doyle no lo volvió a utilizar como herramienta narrativa. De todos modos, nos proporciona un relato contemporáneo de (una de las formas) cómo se conquistó el Oeste de los Estados Unidos, que era probablemente tan interesante en ese momento como lo es hoy. Una buena mezcla entre la novela policíaca y la de aventuras. Una lectura obligada para cualquier aficionado al género.

Está basada en una novela de James Lee Burke y protagonizada por Tommy Lee Jones. La propaganda dice: Nueva Iberia, Luisiana. When the book opens the reader is informed about the peculiarities of the Irish border, an area known as the borderlands: “Eighty years ago it was drawn through fields, farms and rivers by civil servants who knew little more about the area than that which they’d learnt from a map. Now people live with the consequences, owning houses where TV licences are bought in the North and the electricity needed to run them is paid for in the South.

When a crime occurs in an area not clearly in one jurisdiction or another, the Irish Republic’s An Garda Siochana and the Police Service of Northern Ireland work together, each offering all the practical help and advice they can, the lead detective determined generally by either the location of the body or the nationality of the victim”.

On the 21st December 2002 the corpse of fifteen year-old Angela Cashell is found naked in this no-man’s land. Being a citizen of the Republic Angela’s case belongs to Garda Inspector Benedict Devlin. But there are almost no clues but an expensive ring engraved AC and an old picture of a woman no one recognizes. Days later the body of a young University student, is found burned beyond recognition. No one can relate him to Angela, but the same picture is found nearby. The investigation of the ring leads to the identity of the woman in the photo, a prostitute that disappeared some twenty five years ago. Is there any connection between these cases that could eventually bring some light?

I have enjoyed reading this interesting and very entertaining police procedural that caught my attention from page one. The characters are human and very real, and it has a superb sense of place. I enjoyed as well the atmosphere surrounding the story. The plot might have some loose ends and I did found the ending slightly confusing. It seems to me it was written in a hurry. All in all the book is a worthwhile read and I'm looking forward to Gallows Lane, the next one in Inspector Devlin series.

Borderlands is Brian McGilloway debut novel, the first in a new series featuring Inspector Benedict Devlin. It was shortlisted for the CWA New Blood Dagger 2007. The second novel in the series, Gallows Lane, was shortlisted for both the 2009 Irish Book Awards/Ireland AM Crime Novel of the Year and the Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year 2010. Bleed A River Deep, the third Devlin novel, was selected by Publishers Weekly as one of their Best Books of 2010. The fourth novel, The Rising, will be published in paperback in Spring 2011 alongside the new standalone novel, Little Girl Lost, featuring DS Lucy Black.

Al comenzar el libro se informa al lector de las peculiaridades de la frontera irlandesa, una zona conocida como los borderlands: "Se trazó hace ochenta años a través de campos, granjas y ríos por funcionarios que sólo conocían de la zona lo que habían visto en un mapa. Ahora la gente soporta las consecuencias de esa decisión en casas donde la licencia de la televisión se compra en el Norte y la electricidad necesaria para que funcione se paga en el Sur.
Cuando se produce un delito en una zona que no pertenece claramente a ninguna jurisdicción, un policia de la República de Irlanda (An Garda Siochana) y otro de Irlanda del Norte, colaboran ofreciendo cada uno toda la ayuda y los consejos prácticos que pueda aportar, el detective principal se determina bien por el lugar del delito o por la nacionalidad de la víctima ".

El 21 de diciembre de 2002 el cadáver de Angela Cashell de quince años de edad, se encuentra desnudo en esta tierra de nadie. Al ser ciudadana de la República de Irlanda el caso de Angela le corresponde al Inspector Benedict Devlin. Pero no hay casi ninguna pista, sólo un anillo muy caro con las iniciales AC y una fotografía antigua de una mujer a la que nadie reconoce. Días después el cuerpo de un joven estudiante universitario, aparece completamente calcinado, dificilmente reconocible. Nadie le puede relacionar con Angela, pero cerca se encuentra la misma fotografía. La investigación del anillo nos lleva a averiguar la identidad de la mujer en la fotografía, una prostituta que desapareció hace unos veinticinco años. ¿Existe alguna relación entre estos casos que eventualmente pueda arrojar algo de luz?

He disfrutado leyendo este interesante y muy entretenido procedimiento policial que me atrapó desde la primera página. Los personajes son humanos y muy reales, y tiene un excelente el sentido del lugar. También he disfrutado con el ambiente que rodea la historia. La trama puede tener algunos cabos sueltos y he encontrado el final algo confuso. Me parece como si hubiera estado escrito con prisas. En conjunto el libro merece la pena y estoy deseando leer Gallows Lane, el siguiente en la serie del Inspector Devlin.

Brian McGilloway debutó con Borderlands, la primera novela de la serie protagonizada por el inspector Benedict Devlin y fue seleccionada para el Premio New Dagger de la CWA el 2007. La segunda novela de la serie, Gallows Lane, fue seleccionada para el Premio Irish Book del 2009 / Irlanda AM Novela Negra del Año y el Theakston's Old Peculier Novela Negra del año 2010. Bleed A River Deep, la tercera novela del inspector Devlin, fue seleccionada por Publishers Weekly como uno de los mejores libros del 2010. La cuarta novela, The Rising, saldrá esta primavera en edición de bolsillo junto con una nueva novela, independiente en esta ocasión, Little Girl Lost, protagonizada por DS Lucy Black.

Hyland, Adrian (1955) spent many years in the Northern Territory, living and working among Indigenous people. He now lives in St Andrews, Victoria, and teaches at LaTrobe University. His first book, Moonlight Downs –originally published in Australia under the title Diamond Dove, won the 2007 Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction and is the first crime novel to feature an Indigenous protagonist since Arthur Upfield's Boney series. Gunshot Road is his second novel.

En nuestro recorrido por el Alfabeto del Crimen nos detenemos esta semana en la letra "H". Y mi "H" es para……..

Hyland, Adrian (1955) pasó muchos años en el Territorio del Norte, viviendo y trabajando entre aborígenes. Actualmente vive en St Andrews, Victoria, y enseña en la Universidad de LaTrobe. Su primer libro, Moonlight Downs -publicado originalmente en Australia con el título de Diamond Dove, ganó el Premio Ned Kelly a la Mejor Primera Novela en 2007 y es la primera novela negra que tiene un protagonista aborígen después de la serie Boney de Arthur Upfield. Gunshot Road es su segunda novela.

Del editor de Diamond Dove: Algo ha hecho que Emily Tempest regresara a Australia Central –a Moonlight Downs, la comunidad que dejó hace media vida. Nos presenta a las personas que son de allí –personas diferentes, tan sabias, necias e imperfectas como el resto de nosotros. Y nos desvela una historia de ingenio y de poética belleza a través de la cual podemos verlos como en realidad son.

Begoña and I went yesterday to see True Grit (Spanish title Valor de Ley) by Joel & Etan Coen. With 10 nominations, including best picture, it is based on the novel of the same title by Charles Portis. The same novel was previously adapted in 1968 directed by Henry Hathaway and John Wayne won a best-actor Oscar as one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, but I have not seen it. Despite some great scenes at the opening and during part of the chase, I lost interest completely at a certain point and I kept waiting for the end. But I did like the actors' performances though.

My rating 6/10.

Valor de Ley (True Grit), 2010 de Joel y Ethan Coen

Begoña y yo fuimos ayer a ver True Grit (Valor de Ley) de Joel y Etan Coen. Con 10 nominaciones, incluyendo la de mejor película, está basada en la novela del mismo título de Charles Portis. La misma novela que fue adaptada en 1968, dirigida por Henry Hathaway y con la que John Wayne ganó un Oscar como mejor actor interpretanto a Rooster Cogburn, pero no la he visto. A pesar de algunas magníficas escenas al comienzo y durante parte de la persecución, perdí el interés por completo en un determinado momento y me quedé esperando a que acabara. Sin embargo me gustó la interpretación de los actores.

Mi calificación: 6/10.

Blanco Nocturno (2011) es el primer libro que he leído de Ricardo Piglia. Una novela muy esperada que aparece trece años después de su última novela, Plata Quemada (1997). Esto no es raro en el caso de Piglia, anteriormente había publicado Respiración artificial (1980) y La ciudad ausente (1992).Tengo que reconocer que Blanco Nocturno está a la altura de estas expectativas.

La acción se desarrolla en 1972, poco antes del regreso a la Argentina de Perón. La novela está dividida en dos partes de diferente extensión y finaliza con un breve epílogo. En la primera parte, la más extensa, se narra el asesinato de Tony Duran en un pueblo de la provincia de Buenos Aires, que puede ser Adrogué, la ciudad natal de Piglia, según se indica en la novela. Tony Duran, un puertorriqueño con pasaporte estadounidense, acaba de llegar siguiendo los pasos de las hermosas hermanas Belladona, las gemelas Ada y Sofía, hijas de un rico terrateniente. A partir de este crimen la acción se desdobla en múltiples historias que se van entrelazando. Las gemelas tienen dos hermanos por parte de padre, Lucio, ya fallecido, y Luca, que persigue un proyecto demencial, la construcción de una fábrica perdida en medio de la nada. La investigación del crimen es narrada inicialmente por Croce, el jefe de la policía local. Pero Croce es expulsado y acaba en un manicomio; para descansar unos días según dice. A continuación es Emilio Renzi, un periodista de Buenos Aires llegado para cubrir el asesinato, el que toma su papel como narrador.

La novela de Piglia me trae un sinfín de recuerdos y evocaciones difíciles de detallar aquí. La historia es muy original y está construida por diferentes tramas que se multiplican. La propuesta de Piglia es un nuevo género de novela policíaca que tiene que ser inventado, una ficción paranoica, un cuento de nunca acabar. El libro también introduce como nuevo dispositivo narrativo las notas a pie de página.

Excelente novela, muy innovadora, aunque quizá no sea adecuada para todos los gustos. Está maravillosamente escrita y tiene unos personajes y unas historias memorables. Una obra maestra.

This is not unusual in Piglia’s case, he has previously published Artificial Respiration (Respiración artificial, 1980) and The Absent City (La ciudad ausente, 1992). I have to admit that Nocturnal Target falls short to these expectations.

The action takes place in 1972, shortly before the return of Perón to Argentina.The novel has two parts of unequal length and ends with a brief epilogue. The first part, the largest, narrates the murder of Tony Duran in a village in the province of Buenos Aires, which can be Adrogué, Piglia’s hometown, as suggested in the book. Tony Duran, a Puerto Rican with a U.S. passport, has arrived following the footsteps of the beautiful Belladona sisters, the twins Ada and Sophia, daughters of a wealthy landowner. After the crime the action unfolds in multiple stories that often intertwined. The twins have two siblings by their father, Lucio, now deceased, and Luca, which pursues an insane project, the construction of a factory lost in the middle of nowhere. The investigation of the crime is told initially by Croce, the local chief of police, but Croce is dismissed and ends up in a mental assylum for a few days rest, he says. Then Emilio Renzi, a journalist from Buenos Aires who arrived to cover the crime, takes his role as narrator.

Piglia's novel brings to me a myriad of memories and evocations difficult to detail here. The story is very original and it’s built up by different plots that multiplied themselves. Piglia’s proposal is a new genre of detective fiction that has to be invented, a paranoid fiction, a never ending story. The book also introduces footnotes as a new narrative device.

Superb novel, very innovative, though perhaps not for everyone taste. Beautifully written, it has some memorable characters and stories. A masterpiece.

Given that today marks the thirtieth anniversary of the attempted coup d'état in Spain by Lt. Col. Tejero, I’m bringing to your attention the book Anatomy of a Moment, by Javier Cercas. Highly recommended. See review at The Independent. Wikipedia 23-F.

Overview: In February 1981, just as Spain was finally leaving Francos’ dictatorship and during the first democratic vote in parliament for a new prime minister – Colonel Tejero and a band of right-wing soldiers burst into the Spanish parliament and began firing shots. Only three members of Congress defied the incursion and did not dive for cover,: Adolfo Suarez the then outgoing prime minister, who had steered the country away from the Franco era, Guttierez Mellado, a conservative general who had loyally served democracy, and Santiago Carillo, the head of the Communist Party, which had just been legalised.

In The Anatomy of a Moment, Cercas examines a key moment in Spanish history, just as he did so successfully in his Spanish Civil War novel, Soldiers of Salamis. This is the only coup ever to have been caught on film as it was happening, which, as Cercas says, 'guaranteed both its reality and its unreality'. Every February a few seconds of the video are shown again and Spaniards congratulate themselves for standing up for democracy, but Cercas says that things were very quiet that afternoon and evening while all over Spain people stayed inside waiting for the coup to be defeated .... or to triumph. The Alphabet in Crime Fiction Community Meme hosted by Kerrie at Mysteries in Paradise arrives this week to letter "G". My G goes to Giménez Bartlett, Alicia.

Alicia Gimenez Bartlett was born in Almansa, Spain, in 1951 and has lived in Barcelona since 1975. After the enormous success of her first novels, she decided to leave her work as a teacher of Spanish literature, to dedicate herself full-time to writing. In 1997, she was awarded the Femenino Lumen prize for the best female writer in Spain. She subsequently launched her Petra Delicado series, quickly making her into one of Spain’s most popular and loved crime writers. (Taken from Europa editions).

Her last novel Donde Nadie Te Encuentre (Where Nobody Finds You) won the Nadal Prize 2011, Spain’s oldest literature award. The novel tells the story of Teresa Pla Meseguer (1917-2004), a female bandit who joined the resistance movement against Franco’s dictatorship (1939-75).

El Alfabeto del Crimen organizado por Kerrie en Mysteries in Paradise llega esta semana a la letra "G". La G de Giménez Bartlett, Alicia.

Alicia Giménez Bartlett nació en Almansa, España, en 1951 y ha vivido en Barcelona desde 1975. Después del enorme éxito de sus primeras novelas, decidió dejar su trabajo como profesora de literatura española, para dedicarse a escribir a tiempo completo. En 1997, fue galardonada con el Premio Femenino Lumen a la mejor escritora española. Posteriormente empezó a publicar su serie protagonizada por Petra Delicado, con la que consiguió una gran popularidad en toda España.

Su última novela Donde nadie te encuentre ha sido galardonada con el Premio Nadal de 2011, el más antiguo de los premios literarios españoles. La novela cuenta la historia de Teresa Pla Meseguer (1917-2004) una mujer bandido que se unió a la resistencia contra la dictadura de Franco (1939-1975).

Begoña y yo fuimos a ver ayer Pa Negre, una película que ganó la semana pasada la mayor parte de los Premios Goya, 9 de 14 nominaciones. Después de una impresionante secuencia de apertura no me ha gustado demasiado su desarrollo. Me he encontrado con una historia muy confusa y demasiado compleja. No he leído el libro en el que se basa pero me ha parecido de muy difícil adaptación. El resultado final no me ha convencido. Nos podríamos haber ahorrado algunas escenas y algunos personajes, mientras que otros personajes no están suficientemente desarrollados. De hecho, es un drama muy triste, demasiado deprimente para mi gusto. La película es aterradora. Los personajes son demasiado lineales, pero se salvan gracias a la excelente interpretación de la mayoría de los actores. Además de una excelente secuencia de apertura y de una magnífica interpretación se puede destacar también la fotografía, la atmósfera creada y el vestuario.

Mi clasificación: 6/10.

Pa Negre (Black Bread) by Agustí Villaronga

Begoña and I went to see yesterday Pa Negre (Dark Bread), a film that won last week most of the Goya Awards, 9 out of 14 nominations. After an impressive opening I did not like the further development of the film. I found it confusing and complex. I have not read the book on which the story is based, but I found it very difficult to adapt and the end result has not convinced me. Some scenes and some characters could have been avoided, while other characters were not developed properly. In fact it is a very sad drama, too depressing for my taste. The film is terrifying. I found the characters too linear, but they can be saved due to the excellent performance of most actors. Besides the impressive opening and the actor’s excellent performance, the photography, the atmosphere created and the costumes can be highlighted.

Synopsis: In the harsh years of post-war rural Catalonia, Andreu, a youngster relegated to the losers' side, comes across the bodies of a man and his son in the woods. When the authorities want to pin the blame on his father, the boy decides to try and help him, setting out to find out who killed them. The experience teaches Andreu moral awareness in a world of adults nourished by lies. To survive, he betrays his own roots, eventually finding the monster deep inside himself.

Poe’s tales of mystery and imagination laid the groundwork for a new genre in the history of literature, the detective story. In The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), the first of the three tales starring the fictitious C. Auguste Dupin, we find the prototype for many fictional detectives, including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. The story is told in first person by an unnamed narrator and it is also considered the first locked-room mystery.

After a philosophical introduction about the mental features discoursed of as the analytical, the reader is introduced to C. Auguste Dupin by an unnamed narrator:

“This young gentleman was of an excellent – indeed of an illustrious family, but, by a variety of untoward events, had been reduced to such poverty that the energy of his character succumbed beneath it, and he ceased to bestir himself in the world, or to care for the retrieval of his fortunes. By courtesy of his creditors, there still remained in his possession a small remnant of his patrimony; and, upon de income arising from this, he managed, by means of a rigorous economy, to procure the necessaries of life, without troubling himself about its superfluities. Books, indeed, where his sole luxuries, and in Paris these are easily obtained.”

The story then revolves around the double murder of Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter in the Rue Morgue and how C. August Dupin finds an explanation and solves the mystery surrounding the case.

Given its historical significance, its length and its easy accessibility by means of the Internet, this is a must read for every genre aficionado. If you have not read it yet, you won't be disappointed. I'm sure you will enjoy the prose of one of the world's best storytellers.

Los Crímenes de la Calle Morgue por Edgar Allan Poe

Poe sentó las bases de un nuevo género en la historia de la literatura, la historia de detectives en Cuentos de misterio y de imaginación. En Los Crímenes de la Calle Morgue (1841), el primero de los tres cuentos protagonizada por C. Auguste Dupin, nos encontramos con el prototipo de muchos detectives de ficción, como Sherlock Holmes y Hércules Poirot. La historia está contada en primera persona por un narrador sin nombre y también está considerado como el primer misterio de cuarto cerrado.

Después de una introducción filosófica acerca de las características de la inteligencia que suelen calificarse de analíticas, C. Auguste Dupin es presentado al lector por un narrador sin nombre:

"Este joven caballero procedía de una excelente - de hecho de una ilustre familia, pero una serie de desdichadas circunstancias lo habían reducido a tal pobreza que la energía de su carácter sucumbió ante la desgracia, llevándolo a alejarse del mundo y a no preocuparse por recuperar su fortuna. Gracias a la cortesía de sus acreedores le quedó una pequeña parte del patrimonio, y la renta que le producía bastaba, mediante una rigurosa economía, para subvenir a sus necesidades, sin preocuparse de lo superfluo. Los libros constituían su único lujo, y en París éstos son fáciles de obtener.”

La historia gira alrededor del doble asesinato de la señora L'Espanaye y de su hija en la calle Morgue y cómo C. Auguste Dupin encuentra la explicación y resuelve el misterio que rodea al caso.

Por su importancia histórica, su extensión y su fácil accesibilidad a través de Internet, esta es una lectura obligada para todos los aficionado al género. Si no lo han leído, no se sentirán decepcionados. Estoy seguro de que podrán disfrutar de la prosa de uno de los mejores narradores del mundo.
